General Information and Device Compatibility

1. What is roaming

In wireless telecommunications, roaming is a general term referring to the extension of connectivity service in a location that is different from the home location where the service is registered.

Roaming ensures that the wireless device is kept connected to the network, without losing the connection.

Roaming is defined as the ability for a cellular customer to automatically make and receive voice calls, send and receive data, or access other services, including home data services, when travelling outside the geographical coverage area of the home network, by means of using a visited network.

This can be done by using a communication terminal or else just by using the subscriber identity in the visited network.

Roaming is technically supported by mobility management, authentication, authorization and billing procedures.

2. What mobile device can I use Global Roaming SIM™ cards with?

You can use one of the Global Roaming SIM™ cards on smart phones, mobile phones, tablets, laptops, notebooks, modem/dongle or any other connecting device. See device requirements below.

3. Where can I use Global Roaming SIM™ cards?

The Voyageur SIM™ card can be used in 227 countries around the world, and the SecureXpress SIM™ card is available in more than 120 countries for 3G data connection. Please check our "Global Roaming Rates" section for services and rates per country.

4. Can I use Global Roaming SIM™ in any connecting device?

There are two basic device requirements:

  1. The device must be unlocked
  2. To be able to use in any country the device must be multi-band (it can also be referred as Quad band)

5. What is an unlocked phone?

An unlocked phone is not tied to any particular network. You can put any SIM in it and it will register the SIM and connect to the appropriate mobile network operator. It is fairly common in the European market. However, in the North America, it is not as common to see unlocked mobile phones. Your phone may be locked if you purchased it on contract or on a "pay as you go" account.

6. What is a SIM?

Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) is a removable smart-card for mobile devices that use the GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) network. The SIM card allows users to change phones by simply removing the SIM card from one mobile phone and inserting it into another mobile phone.

7. How do I find out if my phone is Unlocked?

An unlocked device is not tied to any particular network. The easiest way to find out is by inserting a SIM card from a different network into your phone. If it operates normally, it is unlocked. If your device is tied to a carrier you can call them and ask for the “unlock code”, this code will unlock your device normally they are obliged to give you the code, however they may change conditions and charge for the code. There are third party unlocking service providers as well.

8. What is Multi-band or Quad phone?

GSM and 3G devices operate at different frequencies depending the country, they can run at 850/900/1800/1900 MHz.
A multi-band (or Quad) device works with 2, 3 or 4 frequencies and is able to connect worldwide using different frequencies.

9. What is a Dual SIM card phone and what are the benefits?

It is a Smart Phone in which you could have two SIM Cards; one is for the local network and the second can be used for Global Roaming SIM™ card.
This will provide local rates with your choice of Network, and provide up to 90% cheaper rates while roaming internationally, without the need to replace the SIM Card in your phone.
Also it can act as a back-up for Voice and SMS in case there is an interruption within the local Network.

Data Roaming

1. What is the difference between 3G and WiFi connection?

The WiFi connection provides a limited footprint and you must be at the Hotspot location to connect, with a WiFi enabled computer or mobile device. WiFi billing is based on your online time regardless of the data traffic you upload or download. A connection fee applies to each new connection additional to the "time" charge.

The Global Roaming 3G international mobile broadband solution connects you while on the move to an available cellular network wherever you are. Mobile broadband billing is charged per 100 kilobytes of data traffic based on uploaded and downloaded volume regardless of online time.

2. How do I save on data roaming?

  1. Deactivate the software auto update feature from your device
  2. Deactivate the auto check email feature
  3. Avoid connecting and disconnecting from the 3G network to avoid connection fees. There is no extra cost for the time you stay online, only the data uploaded and downloaded are charged.
  4. Always select lower cost network. Some networks (Zone B) are much more expensive. You can request deactivation of Zone B from your member area.
  5. Connect to WiFi if you have large files to upload or download. Use 3G connection if you are going to be online for long periods of time and your data volume is small.

3. Why should I switch between 3G and WiFi while roaming?

If you have a large amount of data to upload or download, we suggest you switch to use a WiFi Hotspot connection as billing is per minute not per volume of data. You can then continue to connect through the 3G network for daily use which is billed according to data traffic and not the time spent.

4. How do I choose which network to use?

On your mobile device you can select the network manually by searching the available network, select the lower cost network we provide.
